Owe no one anything, except to love one another; for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. The commandments, “You shall not commit adultery; You shall not murder; You shall not steal; You shall not covet”; and any other commandment, are summed up in this word, “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore, love is the fulfilling of the law.

Besides this, you know what time it is, how it is now the moment for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we became believers; the night is far gone, the day is near. Let us then lay aside the works of darkness and put on the armor of light; let us live honorably as in the day, not in reveling and drunkenness, not in debauchery and licentiousness, not in quarreling and jealousy. Jesus said, “If another member of the church sins against you, go and point out the fault when the two of you are alone. If the member listens to you, you have regained that one. But if you are not listened to, take one or two others along with you, so that every word may be confirmed by the evidence of two or three witnesses. If the member refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if the offender refuses to listen even to the church, let such a one be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector. Truly I tell you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. Again, truly I tell you, if two of you agree on earth about anything you ask, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them.”

Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ

Congregations are communities of people. They usually function well. Some have very strong central authorities, and others work better with leadership by consensus. Nevertheless, all of them, from time to time, have conflicts that arise between members.
Then you might be faced, as we have for some little while now, with those who have no congregation to which they can comfortably align themselves. Those who are unable to find a spiritual home within an existing set-up, or found themselves increasingly at odds with the general direction that a particular group has taken. How are these conflicts to be resolved?
In Matthew’s text for today’s Gospel, Jesus addresses personal conflict by urging people to resolve their differences directly first, and then, if necessary, to bring others into the discussion. We aren’t given details or examples – Jesus’s mission is to create committed communities of believers that will witness God’s love to a battered and broken world.
There are some basic premises at work here: One is that Jesus teaches that God loves all his children and that our need to be right is not always helpful. This might be thought very much to include the whole business of ‘inclusivity!
The congregation is a place where people can work out differences in the community by listening as much as lecturing, by understanding as much as demanding to be understood.
Another premise of Jesus is that healthy leaders are loving, and primarily concerned about others. This works, not because there is some secret group that puts people in their place, but because the entire leadership core cares about all the members and helps troubled newcomers and long-time members fit in without being tagged as problem people.
If you are listening, at this point, you have likely been thinking of how our own faith community matches up. There are countless ways to evaluate the health of a congregation, and some are better than others. Every faith community has its own style of life that is built into its identity and history, and it can be difficult to change if it is unhealthy or has become so with the passage of time. This, sadly, and very clearly has happened in Bangkok, where we are now striving to present a solution to what is undoubtedly a very real dilemma.
The passage from Matthew for this Sunday concludes with a well-known teaching: “Wherever two or three are gathered together in my name, I will be in the midst of them.” This is always heard as a reassurance that God desires us to be in community, whether small or large. Being alone is not necessarily bad, but it can lead to isolation and arrogance. The Divine Triune God is a God of relationships, a dynamic force that empowers our spirituality and grounds us in faith. The Trinity models what our relationships are to be: fully in unity and desiring of diversity.
Jesus does not envisage the Church to be a place of contention and conflict. But we know stories of his disciples and from the Book of Acts that the Early Church experienced a lot of tension and disagreement, even among its apostolic leaders. However, as the church expanded into the Greco-Roman civilization in the West, it had to take on and embrace different norms and customs, as it does even today. The challenge for the Church will always be to find and implement new ways of proclaiming the Good News, just as we are hoping to do now in Bangkok. When we are engaged in that enterprise, when we are more concerned about serving others than survival, there will be less conflict and more delight in the people that God sends to us and sends us to. The health of any congregation rests on its sense of mission and its willingness to be flexible, inclusive and welcoming, as Christ welcomes each of us.

As we offer you this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, we bring before you this bread and this cup and we thank you for counting us worthy to stand in your presence and serve you. Send the Holy Spirit on your people and gather into one in your kingdom all who share this one bread and one cup, so that we, in the company of [N and] all the saints, may praise and glorify you for ever, through Jesus Christ our Lord; by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever.

Father of all we give you thanks and praise that when we were still far off you met us in your Son and brought us home. Dying and living, he declared your love, gave us grace, and opened the gate of glory. May we who share Christ’s body live his risen life; we who drink his cup bring life to others; we whom the Spirit lights give light to the world. 

Keep us in this hope that we have grasped; so we and all your children shall be free, and the whole earth live to praise your name.

Father, we offer ourselves to you as a living sacrifice through Jesus Christ our Lord. Send us out in the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory.

The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord: and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit , be amongst you and remain with you always.

This is the Gospel of the Lord.

Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ

Welcome everyone to the first Eucharist service of our new congregation, St. Paul’s Bangkok! This meeting would not have been possible without all of you. And indeed, I think it is fair to say that, even before setting foot in this room, Christ had already brought us together as a parish. We have a variety of reasons for being here. Some of us wanted to worship according to the traditional Anglican liturgy. Others wanted to worship in a congregation where people from diverse backgrounds are welcome. But all of us are united by a common desire to celebrate the Eucharist together and to form a new community. And so, here we stand.
And because this is such a joyful occasion, our gospel reading from the lectionary may feel out of place, as if a dissonant chord was accidentally struck on a piano and rippled through an otherwise festive party, leaving silence in its wake. It is about conflict resolution, after all, and at our very first meeting together, I doubt that any of us will start an argument and then call on three witnesses to resolve the dispute! The morning is young, and life is unpredictable, but I remain optimistic.
But actually, if we take a closer look at this passage, it is arguably perfect for the occasion. It is not fundamentally about conflict resolution; it is about our unity in Christ. This is why Jesus says, “Where two or three are gathered in my name, there I am among them.” And as we come together this morning in Silom, Christ is among us. And as we gather here, we are gathered into His presence.
And that presence is an all-encompassing love. St. Augustine says that Christ is nearer to us than our innermost depth. But He is also present beyond us, in other people. And so, we are immersed in love, as a flock of birds is immersed in air, and a school of fish is immersed in water.
This passage is also about reconciliation. And as I said earlier, at first glance this seems to be an untimely topic. But at the end of the day, reconciliation is not an action that we perform or a procedure that we follow; it is a state of being. Reconciliation is not something we do; it is what we are. Merely by existing, we are already reconciled to God—since He created us to be in communion with Him—and merely by enjoying fellowship, we are reconciled to each other. None of us are ever truly happy if we are alone or isolated, after all. We find our deepest fulfillment only in relationship with God and with other people. And this tells us something about who we are: we are made in the image of the Trinity.
The Father, the Son, and the Spirit are distinct persons, as St. Thomas Aquinas says, but they are also substantial relations. They are defined by their relationship to each other. The Father is the Father only because He begets the Son in eternity. And the Son is the Son only because He is born of the Father. And so on. And in a similar way, in worship and in community, we discover our true selves and reawaken to our deep identity as relational beings.
My heart is filled with hope for this new congregation. We come from a variety of countries—Thailand, England, America, and so on—and yet we all share a longing to celebrate the Eucharist and to ensure that St. Paul’s is a place where all feel welcome. All of this means that reconciliation is occurring right here and now. Reconciliation is not a result of following a procedure for conflict resolution; it a sign and a ripple of the presence of Christ among us.
As Christ says, “Where two or three come together in my name, I am there among them.” May this gathering be the first of many.

Grant us, therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of your dear son Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that we may evermore dwell in him and he in us.  Amen.

THE THANKSGIVING

Let us pray.

Father of all we give you thanks and praise that when we were still far off you met us in your Son and brought us home. Dying and living, he declared your love, gave us grace, and opened the gate of glory. May we who share Christ’s body live his risen life; we who drink his cup bring life to others; we whom the Spirit lights give light to the world. 

Keep us in this hope that we have grasped; so we and all your children shall be free, and the whole earth live to praise your name.

Father, we offer ourselves to you as a living sacrifice through Jesus Christ our Lord. Send us out in the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory.

The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord: and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit , be amongst you and remain with you always.

Amen.
